The Matildas have suffered a significant blow ahead of next month's FIFA women's World Cup with star striker Kate Gill ruled out of the tournament due to a knee injury.
Gill underwent surgery in Adelaide on Tuesday after damaging her anterior cruciate ligament while playing for her Swedish club side Linkoping in Stockholm last week.
The 26-year-old loomed as a key figure in Australia's campaign in Germany, where they will face Brazil, Equatorial Guinea and Norway in the group stage.
Gill was instrumental in the Matildas' historical Asian Cup win last year and was named Asian player of the year.
Australia open their World Cup campaign against Brazil in Moenchengladbach on June 29.
